Internship at Centro Humboldt Barcelona
A progress report
Name: Monika Drew
Age: 20
Education: International Business and Communications studies
Duration of the internship 5 month
Why did you choose to do your internship at Centro Humboldt in Barcelona?
I wanted to work in an international company where I could use my
languages. And since intercultural communication is part of my studies it suited
me well to do my internship in Centro Humboldt which offers seminars in this
field.
How many hours did you work per day? 8 hours.
Please describe a typical workday. Most of the time I worked
at the reception which meant answering the phone, talking to customers and
teachers, preparing teaching material and exam papers, writing and translating
texts.
How were you treated as an intern from abroad? I was treated
very friendly and everyone was happy to help with questions regarding the
Spanish language. It was easy to get into contact with people and I enjoyed
working in an international environment.
How important was the participation in Spanish language lessons to
you? The course was very important to me because I wanted to enhance my
grammar additionally to everyday speaking. I thoroughly enjoyed the lessons and
learned a lot in class.
In everyday work have you already noticed differences to the working
world of your country - concerning behaviour at work, dresscode, addressability
of superiors? To me the whole working environment seemed less formal
than in Germany. In Centro Humboldt hierachies are very flat and addressability
of superiors is good.
How will you use your gained experiences as an intern after your
return to Germany? After my return I would like to do the DELE exam to
have an official confirmation of my Spanish skills. And I would like to find a
student job where I can use my experience and my gained self-confidence.
